Controlled burn of the prairies at the Dean Nature Sanctuary

fire

The Oak Brook Park District would like to inform Village residents that a controlled burn of the prairies at the Dean Nature Sanctuary located at 115 Canterberry Lane in Oak Brook will be taking place in the fall of 2018.  The work will take place over the course of two days once the vegetation at the site is dry enough for an effective burn.

The Park District expects the burn to take place sometime between November 9th and December 31st. While the burn is underway, you may see and smell smoke in and around the Dean Nature Sanctuary.  The burn is conducted by a team of licensed prescribed burn contractors who are on site before, during, and after the burn is complete. Controlled burns are necessary for the health and development of native prairie habitats like those found at the Dean Nature Sanctuary. Without burns, invasive trees, shrubs, and weeds invade local habitats and shade out native plants.
