In addition to Oak Brook's boundaries, our
department also covers several miles of the
Tri-State (I-294) and Reagan (I-88) tollways for which we received $68,500 in revenue for 2008. The highest percentage of incidents that the fire department responds to are emergency medical calls which include; medical emergencies, traumatic injuries and motor vehicle collisions which may also include vehicle extrication. In addition to structure fires, we respond to cooking fires, dumpster/rubbish fires, outside/brush fires, and motor vehicle fires. Other types of incidents to which we respond include automatic fire alarm activations, smoke removal, odor investigations, invalid assists, weather related emergencies (such as lightning strikes and downed power lines), elevator rescues involving trapped occupants, house lock outs, and hazardous conditions (such as carbon monoxide detector activations, gas leaks, electrical emergencies and chemical leaks or spills). In addition to our calls, we also provide automatic and mutual aid to our neighboring departments when needed, as they do for us.
When not responding to emergencies, fire personnel perform a host of other activities, most important of which is Fire/Rescue and emergency medical training. This training allows us to develop and maintain our skills. In addition, we are required to meet certain state mandated training requirements. Other activities include hydrant testing, fire hose testing, station tours, community presentations and displays, station maintenance, daily vehicle response readiness checks, and vehicle and equipment maintenance. Administrative tasks now being performed by on-duty firefighters include Emergency Management, Standard Operational Guideline (SOG) development and revision, preplans, payroll, and equipment and supply procurement.
