Fire
Prevention
The primary objective of the Fire Prevention Division
of the Fire Department is to assist our community in providing
a safe working and/or living environment with a special
emphasis on preventing fires. This is accomplished through
regular fire code inspections of all commercial buildings
in Oak Brook. Residential fire safety inspections
may also be performed at the request of any Oak Brook
homeowner by simply calling
630-368-5220 to schedule an appointment.

Safety Education page or contact the Public Education

Alarm Fees for False Alarms
The Oak Brook
Fire Department encourages residents and businesses to
have their fire alarm systems tested annually to ensure
they are working properly and do not malfunction and/or
transmit false fire alarms that require unnecessary emergency
response. Fees for false alarms are assessed and
a bill sent depending on the number of false alarms.
If you have a question regarding a false alarm bill or
feel that you have received a bill in error, please contact
the Fire Chief at 630-368-5200.
Permits - Bonfires and Open Burning
A permit is required in Oak Brook for open burning for all fires with the exception of cooking fires and leaf burning. An EPA Permit must be obtained for all wildland burns. To obtain a permit, click here for specific requirements.
Contact the Fire Prevention
Bureau at 630-368-5220 for additional information.
KNOX-BOX Rapid Entry System
A Knox Box, known officially as the KNOX-BOX Rapid Entry System is a small, wall-mounted safe that holds building keys for firefighters and EMTs to retrieve in emergencies. Local fire companies can hold master keys to all such boxes in their response area, so that they can quickly enter a building without having to force entry or find individual keys held in deposit at the station. Knox Boxes simplify key control for local fire departments. They also cut fire losses for building owners since firefighters can enter buildings without breaking doors or windows. For more information contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at (630) 368-5220.
Permits - Alarm and Sprinkler
If you are installing a
Fire Alarm System, Sprinkler System or cooking
suppression system you are required
to obtain a permit from the Fire Prevention Bureau at 1200 Oak
Brook Road. To do so, you will need to fill out
an application and submit the following: If the Fire Alarm
or Sprinkler System is part of a larger construction and/or
remodeling project, provide your permit number from the
General Contractor on the job. If you do not have
one, you will need to first contact the Community Development
Department (Building Department) at 630-368-5100 for instructions
on obtaining the required permit.
- If this is the only work to be done and it is not
part of a larger construction and/or remodeling project,
contact the Fire Department at 630-368-5220 or stop
in at the Community Development Department at 1200 Oak Brook Rd. for the
paperwork to start the Alarm and/or Sprinkler permit
process.
- In both of the above situations, you will need
to supply a minimum of two sets of as-built drawings
and cut sheets for the work being performed. Sprinkler
drawings should be accompanied by hydraulic calculations
if required for the system being installed.

Plan Submittals".
The turn-around time for the sprinkler
and alarm permit process is approximately 7-14 working
days. This does not include the time needed by Community
Development if this is part of a larger construction and/or
remodeling project.
Once the Fire Alarm and/or Sprinkler System work is completed,
an inspection of the work is required for final approval.
You will need to call 630-368-5220 to schedule the inspection.
Prior to calling, please note the following:
- Have your permit number ready and the approximate
square footage of the area being inspected.
- Three business days' notice is needed prior to the
inspection (630-368-5220).
- All alarm detection tests are only witnessed on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the exception of after hours testing which requires an additional fee.
- Have a Fire Alarm Equipment test report prior
to any alarm inspection.
- Make sure that the management and tenants of
a multi-tenant building are aware that testing
will be taking place.
- Before the test is performed take the fire alarm
out of service for the test day by contacting the
emergency communications dispatcher at 630-990-2341
and have the alarm number available. After
the test is finished, contact the emergency dispatcher
again to put the alarm back in service.
- Be sure to have a qualified individual available
for the test to accompany the inspector (e.g. alarm
or sprinkler contractor).
