Field
The Field Division provides the community with
the assurance of a safe environment by providing uninterrupted twenty-four-hour
preventative patrol. We have approximately 30 Officers and 4
civilians assigned to the Field Division. We use specialized units to
address community crime issues i.e. K-9, selective traffic enforcement
and TAC units for interdiction of specific criminal activity.
SPEEDBOARD
This
self-contained trailer monitors motorists speeds by way of a
radar gun and displays the vehicle's speed for the driver to
see. It is also equipped with a computer system that is capable
of recording the number of vehicles and speeds during a pre-determined
period of time. This trailer is primarily used in residential
neighborhoods to gain voluntary compliance of posted speed limits.
COMMUNITY
SERVICE OFFICERS
We have four CSO's assigned to the patrol division. They provide a
large array of services to our department. These services include:
- Parking enforcement.
- Ordinance enforcement for violations such as abandoned
vehicles on private property, animal control, etc.
- Accident investigation on private property accidents.
- Fire alarm response.
- Motor vehicle theft reports and reports of theft from vehicle
or burglary to vehicle reports.
The CSOs
do not have any police powers of arrest.
These
officers allow our patrol officers to concentrate their efforts
on service and preventative
patrol for our community.
BICYCLE PATROL
The bike unit provides for a more immediate
response to calls for service in those areas inaccessible by
squad car. The Village of Oak Brook has many wooded areas and
parks and local bike trails.
Our bike unit currently consists of eleven
officers and 1 supervisor. These officers have completed
certification in the operation of their specially equipped bike
units. The normal times of operation are from May 1st to
September 1st weather permitting. On occasion the season may be
extended.
These officers are expected to supplement our
patrol officers in responding to calls and taking appropriate
enforcement action.
Bike officers are assigned to special events,
educational programs to assist in DARE and incidents in which
crowd control may be needed.

UNIT
|
The Oak
Brook Police K-9 Unit was formed in 1993 and provides valuable
assistance to the Oak Brook Police Department as a strong officer
safety tool as well as a deterrent to criminal activity.
Oak Brook
Canine Teams are trained and certified to perform the following
tasks:
- Search buildings and areas for unauthorized persons.
- Track criminals and search for lost children, etc.
- Search for evidence dropped by criminals in flight.
- Search for hidden narcotics.
- Pursue and apprehend, with minimum force, criminals fleeing
a serious crime and arrest.
- Apprehend on command only, or without command in protection
of the Handler.
Active
as a patrol unit in the Village, the K-9 Team is also on 24-hour
call. On average, the K-9 Unit responds to 200 calls for
service each year where the dog is deployed. This in addition
to routine patrol and other police calls that do not require
the use of the canine. On occasion, other departments
may request mutual-aid from this unit.

K-9 Brutus began patrolling oak Brook in 2006. Brutus is a Belgian Malinois
from Holland and only
responds to the Dutch
commands given by his
handler and partner
Officer Danny Ramirez.
K-9 Brutus is a
certified police service
dog trained in narcotics
detection, building
searches, evidence
recovery, tracking,
handler protection and
criminal apprehension.
Oak
Brook K-9 teams attend DARE functions and other educational
events at local schools and organizations. Many times
the K-9 unit is requested at special neighborhood gatherings
and area-wide police and public safety exhibits.
Oak Brook is also active in the Illinois Police Work Dog
Association.
The unit
is constantly updating the training required to maintain a high
level of effectiveness. Both the officer and the canine are
expected to be proficient at every level of activity.
Police K-9 dogs, properly trained and handled, give Oak Brook
officers one of the finest aids in the prevention
and detection of crime, and the apprehension of criminal offenders. |
